The nuclear model of the atom underlies all of chemistry, nuclear power, PET scanning and radiocarbon dating of archaeology and climate records. Element 104 is rutherfordium, and he appears on the New Zealand $100 note. His research-school model — a director who sets problems and lets young people run the apparatus — became the template for modern big-team physics, from CERN to the Manhattan Project he refused to imagine.
