Sent home from Cambridge by plague in 1665, Newton invented calculus, split white light into its spectrum and conceived universal gravitation in about eighteen months. The Principia of 1687 gave the world its first complete mathematical physics: three laws of motion plus an inverse-square gravity that predicted the solar system.

Every bridge, aircraft, engine and satellite is designed with Newtonian mechanics; spacecraft navigation to Mars uses his equations, not Einstein's, except for tiny corrections. Calculus is the mathematical language of economics, epidemiology, climate modelling and machine learning. The 'laws of nature' framing — universal, mathematical, discoverable — became the model for all subsequent science and much of Enlightenment political theory.

Newton never married and left no children; he died intestate and his estate was divided among eight half-nieces and half-nephews.

    Newton died unmarried and intestate in 1727. His estate passed to eight half-nephews and half-nieces of the Smith and Barton families; his papers went to Catherine Barton and her husband John Conduitt.

    Kept house for Newton in London and inherited the manuscripts. Through her daughter the papers passed to the Portsmouth family, which is why the alchemical writings survived to be sold at Sotheby's in 1936.
