Pasteurised milk is a legal requirement in most countries; hospital antisepsis and hand hygiene descend directly from his work and were the frontline of COVID-19 response. The attenuation principle he invented is how measles, polio and yellow fever vaccines are made. The Institut Pasteur operates a network of 33 institutes across five continents, and it was a Pasteur team that isolated HIV in 1983.
